Hartford Shockers win 2022 Super Cup with 130-110 win over Petersburg Cavaliers in Champion vs Champion Matchup - Jun 27, 2022

Tylon Smith (6'2''-G-1992, college: S.Connecticut, agency: Interperformances) Jr. was named player-of-the-game in over half of the Hartford Shockers 15 games this season, and on Saturday, the Manchester native and former Southern Connecticut State University star came through with the season on the line. 'We lean on him heavily to take us where we need to be,' team owner and head coach Donovin Ford-Hayes said of Smith after his team pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 130-110 win over the Petersburg (Virginia) Cavaliers Saturday afternoon to win the ECBL Super Cup Championship. Smith, who is a math teacher at Illing Middle School in Manchester, was once again selected as the player-of-the-game after scoring a game-high 34 points with seven assists and six rebounds. Tarchee Brown (6'3''-G-1996, college: ECSU) and Samuel Durodola (6'4''-F, college: Becker) added 25 points each while Chaise Daniels (6'8''-C-1995, college: Quinnipiac) (19) and Saul Phiri (6'4''-G, college: La Salle) (15) gave the Shockers five players in double digits. 'This is a special team,' Smith said. 'I've said it all year that this is probably the most talented and deepest rosters I've ever been a part of. It was a long journey but we stayed together and never lost sight of the goal.' The game featured at least a dozen lead changes and was tied at 55 at the half, and at 89 going into the fourth quarter. Once the Shockers took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter, the defense - particularly Duradola and Phiri (10 rebounds apiece) along with Devin Marsh (6'7''-F, college: Pratt CC) and Scottie Dulaire - held off a very tough Petersburg team that had only lost one game during the season. Ford-Hayes acknowledged his team's first half defensive breakdowns and talked them through in the locker room at halftime. 'We knew we had to flip that gear a little bit, especially defensively,' he said. Ford-Hayes said that he is appreciative of the guys who are on the team. 'This is a different atmosphere,' he said. 'A lot of guys aren't used to it. It takes a lot to be part of a team like this. It's very demanding at times. I truly appreciate the guys on this team and I'm thankful to have them.' As for defending the Super Cup next season, Ford-Hayes understands that the Shockers will be the team to beat. 'We had a bullseye on our back from the beginning regardless of what anybody wants to say,' said Ford-Hayes.. 'People were out for us from the beginning and it's going to stay that way. We aren't going anywhere and will continue to put that product out there and continue to win.' 'I'm happy for the organization, my teammates, the fans but most importantly, the city of Manchester,' Smith added. 'We did this one together and that's what makes it special'

Cavaliers Bring Championship Home to Petersburg - Jun 20, 2022

The Carolina Crusaders travelled to the Burg to face the leagues number one team. The Petersburg Cavaliers. The game decided the East Coast Basketball League Champion for 2022. The fifth seed and Southern Conference Champion Crusaders had proven to be a giant killer of sorts taking out the league's pre-season favorite and ECBL perennial powerhouse PrimeTime Players in the early rounds of the playoffs. Carolina pulled offanother upset in the final four coming back from a double-digitdeficit to knock off the South-East Division number one seed Carolina Thunder. Saturday, they had their eyes set on another upset. For the Cavaliers the rode to the championship game had challenges of its own. Being the leagues only remaining undefeated team late in the season, the Cavs saw every team regardless of their record battling to beat the undefeated. It wasn't until the Cavs faced the Hoyas for the last time in the regular season, they would taste defeat. The Hoyas eked out a one-point victory on their home court. And it would be the Hoys the Cavs would have to face again on the rode in the semi-finals to secure their berth into the championship game. And while the game was back-and-forth through three quarters, the Cavs pulled away from the Hoyas earning their ticket to the big show. The Crusaders were coming into the game representing the faced-paced high scoring Southern Conference, a conference noted for offense, not defense. The Cavaliers had demonstrated some of the most solid and aggressive defense in the league. That defense was expected to overwhelm the Crusaders, while the Cavaliers were expected to struggle against the long-range shooting of the Crusaders. But both teams proved that they were ready for the challenge. Although the Cavaliers applied pressure to the ball almost immediately in the game, the Crusaders broke down the press and nailing twelve of their 18 three-pointers in the first half. Rob Whitfield drained five three-pointers finishing with seven on the evening while game scoring leader nailed four of his six three-pointers in the first half on his was to a game high 35 points. Even with pinpoint shooting the Cavaliers were able to secure a three-point lead at the end of the first and stretch that out to ten by the half leading the Crusaders 74-64 at the end of the second. Midway through the second the Crusaders had built a four-pointlead until the Cavs reapplied a full-court pressure defense resulting in a 12-0 run and a crucial swing in momentum. With five seconds left in the half the Cavs pushed the lead out to ten with Elijiah Moore drained a three from the corner drawing a foul and sinking the foul shot capping of the four-point play. Championships are often won or lost on the line. But on Saturday, neither team was giving ground. The Cavaliers finished 89% from the line going 23 of 26 and 8 of 9 in the second half. The Crusaders were just as accurate shooting 86% finishing 12 of 14 from the line. The Crusaders opened the third with a 7-0 run pulling the game within three. The game continued to be tight with 3:20 to go in the third with the Crusaders within four points of the Cavs, the closest they would get to boys from the Burg before the end of the game. That's when the Cavaliers orchestrated another run pushing the lead back out to 10 points with just two minutes left in the quarter. By the 6:07 mark of the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers had extended the lead to 121-107. The Crusaders began to rally as the Cavaliers struggled from the floor and with turnovers. In an effort to keep the pressure on, Coach Dixon again applied full-court pressure with four minutes left in the match-up forcing the Crusaders into tough buckets. Carolina managed to gain some ground but not enough as the Cavaliers went on to win the championship 134 to 124. Game MVP Walter Williams (6'5''-F-1997, college: Virginia St.) finished the night with 33 points and 4 rebounds, He was joined by five other Cavs in double digits, Gage Yesbeck (6'8''-C-1994, college: Bluefield) with 11 points and 3 rebounds, Deshaun Morman with 11 points and 6 rebounds, Melvin Gregory (6'8''-F-1993) with 12 points and 8 rebounds, Elijiah Moore with 33 points and 8 rebounds and Tavon Mealy whose dominating performance inside posted the teams only double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Crusaders had four players in double digits including Jalin Alexander with 22, Rob Whitfield with 29, Ryan Scott with 35 and Cornelius Reynolds who posted a double-double with 27points and 10 rebounds. Two bonus games remain in the 2022 season. The PetersburgCavaliers will travel to Manchester, CT to face the Hartford Shockers in the ECBL's SuperCup on Saturday June 25th. The final game of the season will be the All-Star game held July 9thin Charlotte, NC.
